Sexual Health

Sexual Health

“ Sexuality is one of the biggest parts of who we are. ”

Sexual Health

According to World Health Organization definition “sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.

Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences.” (WHO, 2006a)

Human Sexuality

Is a central aspect of being human throughout life encompasses sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction.

Sexuality is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, practices, roles and relationships.

Sexuality is influenced by the interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic, political, cultural, legal, historical, religious and spiritual factors. (WHO, 2006a)

Sexual Relationship

Functional Gynecology has been using the spectrum of SPICE* to discover the inner soul of the Human Sexuality.

Female Sexual Function

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is encompasses a disturbance in sexual functioning involving one or more phases of the sexual response cycle. FSD is a multifactorial condition that has anatomical, physiological, medical, psychological, and social components.(1)

FSF has traditionally included disorders of desire, arousal, pain/discomfort, and inhibited orgasm,(2) but according to DSM 5, FSD categories included orgasmic disorder, sexual interest/arousal disorder and genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder.

Despite lack of epidemiological data, the available estimates are that 43% of women complain of at least one sexual problem. (3)

Female desire and arousal disorders are among the most common presenting problems in clinical settings.

Orgasmic dysfunction appears in the field with an iceberg phenomenon.

A major barrier to the development of clinical research in this area has been the absence of well-defined endpoints and outcomes, which reflects the current lack of definition, diagnostic and prognostic framework for treating sexual dysfunction.

Classification of Female Sexual Disorders

*oLifelong (1ry): the disturbance has been present since the individual became sexually active.
*oAcquired (2ry): the disturbance began after a period of relatively normal sexual function.
*oGeneralized: not limited to certain types of stimulation, situations, or partners.

*Situational: only occurs with certain types of stimulation, situations, or partners
